Was your problem the vehicular unit, or the vehiclular unit motivation activator? I have not driven a 2wd vanagon on ice and snow, but I do drive my Cherokee around regularly in 2wd, on summer tires. Do you have 2 or 4 Nokians under your van? What were you doing when it was trying to swap ends?
