"NEVER overheats because of bad thermostat. That is a wife's tale. It may have overheated cause someone either installed the flaps wrong or had thermostat adjusted incorrectly, but thermostat NEVER fails closed." Unless of course, the thermostat was bad when it was installed. This is the first VW engine I have worked on, so I didn't recognize that the thermostat was bad when I installed it. Bad thermostats do not expand when they heat up, so the flaps remained in the closed position and the engine got a bit warm. Ok, now you made me admit my embarrassing newbie mistake to the whole list. Didn't I ask you NOT to ask! Now that I have the heads removed is it advisable to go ahead and pull the jugs. Bentley 13.11 talks about installing a 1.6 mm shim underneath the jugs and eliminating the head gasket. Is this necessary? Thanks, Jake
