>>>>>>To rebuild a horizontal engine such as Bug ,Bus , Air Cooled Vanagon or Water Cooled 2.1 you should get a New piston & cylinder kit./ The pistons & cylinders have a tendency to wear oblong or egg shaped . what you do is put new round rings into 2 egg shaped objects = piston/ cylinder ) It is bad news to do so / Honing NO // Dont be foolish do it correctly !!! I have thousands of the horizontal rebuilds under my belt . Over 40 years of VW parts & service ( TAKE MY ADVICE !!! )<<<<<< Nope, I don't agree! Flat engine have one advantage, there is always a small film of oil at the bottom of each cylinder, like a nice and oily cushion. As for oil consumption, it's a VW, what can you expect! BMW & Honda motorcycles are renown for those flat 2 and 4, on my bench I have a GL1100 Interstate wasser with 122k miles, original, never rebuilt... I won’t change the pistons!!! Am amaze!
