Most bang for the buck would be to overhaul it yourself. Assuming the final drive is in good condition, a local trans shop should be able to overhaul the auto section for ~ 4 hours labor, including new final drive seals. The basic overhaul kits are fairly cheap but some seals should/have to come from the dealer. Make sure to get the "master kit, a new 2nd gear brake band, and the three pistons for the clutch packs. I also ike to replace the steel plates. Do this regardless of present condition. Also, get the torque converter rebuilt. They do fill with crud and I have seen the one way clutch inside them fail. The seal surface also needs to be welded/polished and the support bushing replaced. As the Vanagon Converter is unique, yours will probably have to be sent out.

hey all.. anyone know a fair price for an auto trans rebuild.. if the transmission is removed and dropped off at a shop? I am trying to debate if i should install a good used one when i put a new engine in.. or rebuild my current one.. which is starting "take a crap" on me... which way would i get the most bang for my buck if you will... any advice... thanks everyone.... jesse 89 carat
