Here in Illinois you can get arrested for trying to put gas in unapproved
containers.  I ran out of gas one time and tried to use a blue plastic kerosene
can.  I got about a half gallon in before the attendant shut the pump off from
inside.  I keep an empty plastic 1 gal gasoline container under the rear seat
of my Vanagon Carat.  I keep a 1 gal unopened can of Coleman fuel in my Westy.
 I have used it more than once on a dark night in an unfamiliar place
