Sorry that you have to go through this, you are correct in believing the insurance co. is probably underestimating your vans value. I would look on the internet for similar year and model vans, start with jdbimportsimports.com and Go-Westy's site, they both deal in vanagons and will have the higher prices that you will need to successfully negociate your position with. You can also search ep.com under Volkswagon, Vanagon, or try autotrader.com for private sellers. What ever you do, be firm and hold your ground. If they still want to total your van, you can always take it back for salvage value, which is what they would get selling the remains to a wrecking yard. If it is totaled and you buy the salvage, you need to check with your local DMV to see how they handle titling a vehicle after it has been reported as a total.
