Unless of course, the thermostat was bad when it was installed. This is the first VW engine I have worked on, so I didn't recognize that the thermostat was bad when I installed it. Bad thermostats do not expand when they heat up, so the flaps remained in the closed position and the engine got a bit warm. Ok, now you made me admit my embarrassing newbie mistake to the whole list. Didn't I ask you NOT to ask!

Now that I have the heads removed is it advisable to go ahead and pull the jugs. Bentley 13.11 talks about installing a 1.6 mm shim underneath the jugs and eliminating the head gasket. Is this necessary?
