If the pistons were seizing, how would that effect a push start? I can push start the van by myself (with a few acrobatics), but tapping the solenoid has definitely allowed a normal start now a couple of times.

<snip> It would be a rarity for a new starter not to have a new solenoid hanging on its side. Was a new starter bushing installed in the case? If this van is an air-cooled, are you sure the pistons aren't seizing once heat soak has taken its toll after a blast down the highway? One easy thing to try which can't hurt is to install a heavy gauge grounding bond (jumper) from one of the starter mounting bolts to the chassis. I've never had to do it myself, but it seems to have its advocates.
