After taking a good look at the donor westy we found (and getting permission from the wife) I'm tempted to convert it or install a rebuilt engine instead of chopping the top.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's done a VW conversion w/ and automatic. The bolt pattern looks different on the auto than the diesel bellhousing. KEP does make adapter plates to put it on.

I have one that I bought from Seth at H&R in Santa Barbara. He was replacing w/ a Subaru IIRC. I can poke around it if you have any specific questions. It's going to sit on my garage floor until I can find a suitable van to put it in. This mounts in the more upright position which requires a different rear mount as well. I believe there is a strong possibility that this is a Fast Forward packaged conversion. You can out your own package together if you have the time and patience to do so. It'll save you some money as compared to having a company source everything for you.

Only you can say which plan can be tolerated by your wallet and/or your significant other.
