Advanced timing often causes high unburned HC at idle. One of the tricks to passing a car that has too much idle HC is to retard the timing as much as you can get away with. You'll probably want to put the timing back to stock for your smog test. If the engine is in good condition and the CAT is really good it may not matter much, but usually the smog guy checks it and requires that it be to factory spec anyway...
