there are plenty of plug-in 12V automotive leds available, which would probably be the most efficient and least expensive way to go.

incidently, led brake lights turn on about 0.2 s faster than the standard 1157 bulb, which theoretically translates into about 18 ft greater available stopping distance for following car.
