way back in the day when i was still considering rebuilding my 1.9 i took
it over to the local auto machinist that i had used for other projects in
the past with good results. more precisely i took over the pistons and
sleeves to see if they could be reused since i was tight on money. we got
out the spec book, the good quality dial bore gauge, and the micrometers.
we checked every item and then had this discussion. in my case the
sleeves had little wear on them after 100,000+ miles. we arrived at the
conclusion that if i built the custom hold downs to hold the sleeves
true to the tool bed. the sleeves could be cut down with a good new
hone enough to get a fresh surface to seal new rings and still be inside of
the vw spec. i never took him up on the project but to this day i still
believe it would be possible if you were on a tight budget. of course
realize this was with my sleeves in good condition and that you will
never get the longevity and possibly the performance of quality new
items.
