I would never have guessed, but the snorkel makes a very noticeable power difference on the diesel vans. In my (former) 1983 ASI camper, the snorkel made about a 5 MPH difference in top speed at full throttle in high gear. VW must have paid some attention to tuning the system. I couldn't say if that would also apply to the gas models.
