A buddy of mine (who's a real McGiver) built his own booster fan for his '81 Westy using a heater blower motor from an water-cooled Vanagon. Fabricated a bracket right above the spare tire to hold blower in place, routed the large cardboard duct into & out of the fan housing, and then modified the existing fan switch for a fourth position (apparently there is a blank spot on the Air-cooled switch, I would just find a 4 spd fan switch probably from a Jetta or some other V-dub).

Making sure your heating system is complete and sealed from front to back.

With this auxiliary fan running it would get so hot in the front cabin you couldn't run it but about 15 minutes out of an hour...

Once he made a insulated curtain that he installed behind the fronts seats he only needed to run the booster fan about once or twice an hour for 5 minutes or so...

We had taken a couple 2-3 hr trips in our harsh NH winters and most of the time we were in T-shirts...
