While it isn't a replacement for something near and dear, I put in an Alpine CDA-9815 and I have been very pleased with the unit. It has minimal glitzy crap, a functional multi purpose knob and some nice features for our vanagons -

Aux input - I ran one input back by the power outlet in the rear where I connect an RCA to mini jack converter and plug my dvd player or laptop in to get great sound. We went camping during Christmas break. This was a very nice addition.

CD/MP3/WMA with random play - much music can fit on one cd. The random play keeps it fresh. An intuitive navigation screen lets you organize and view your music by folders. Search function is easy to use too.

The other usual niceties - remote control, sub control from the unit. This is very nice. I added a 6" sub just right of the heater under the back seat. Adjustment from the unit allows amazing refinement to the sound. XX radio support should I ever live extravagant enough to spend that monthly fee.
