These little heaters put out a lot of moisture. They are a type of
ctalytic heater. Burn with no flame. They usually come with a fire proof
cap with which to smother the fire.
They are still used in the north country by pilots out in the bush where
there is no electricity. The airplanes have "Cowling Blankets" - custom
fit covers that are carried in the aircraft to wrap the engines up with
to prevent them from cooling down to much. They can also serve as extra
emergency blankets for people too. For over night stays, the catalytic
burners are pulled out and lit, then in a few minutes the heater can be
tucked away inside the cowling with the cowling blanket wrapped around
it. The engine will be toasty warm the next morning and will fire right
up. If it goes out ....woe, woe!! The pilot will be able to do chin-ups
on the propeller next morning and it will never move.
