Matthew,

Really love the "None of this arm-chair-expert crap" qualifier.

To properly answer your question I'd like to know if you plan on a one or two battery setup.

As you may remember ... I've been using a two optima setup since the beginning of my Roadtrip.

After 24/7 usage over a one year period I'm glad to share my experiences and humble opinions.

Short answer

1. If you are planning on a one battery system and consume very little electricity for auxiliary equipment (lights, fridge, stereo etc) I'd say .... Go with a good regular battery

2. If you plan to consume more electricity for auxiliary equipment ...... Go with an Optima red top. They are designed to handle over 200 discharge cycles vs 40-50 typically for a regular automotive battery. In my experience.... The Optima's will actually handle many more times that.

3. If you are planning on a two battery system ...... Go with two identical Optima Red Tops. Having two identical batteries (age and type) will greatly simplify your recharging performance.

4. If you were in a warmer climate and needed slightly more amp hours .... I'd say go with two yellow top optima's.

Note .... Although less of a concern. Even though the primary battery box is vented, I have never liked the idea of having a wet cell battery inside my living area. I feel much more comfortable with a sealed battery that does not outgas.

Hope this helps.

Battery is dead. Is the Optima *really* a better option (red top)? Give me some good evidence why it is better, including actual use. None of this arm-chair-expert crap. 100$ for this versus $40 for a regular battery is a big deal. -matthew 86 syncro
