I have a shipment of Syncro Decouplers coming in from Europe that are an exact copy of the original SDP decouplers. What makes these different from the decouplers that are being sold in North America now? The big difference is the presence of a needle bearing between the 'two halves' of the system.

With the non-needle bearing decoupler, if you have a difference in front and rear section speeds for an extended period of time there is a potential of damage occurring as it is a metal on metal design separated by only gear oil.

The needle bearing decoupler is an exact copy of the VW Original unit and has a needle bearing between the two halves so that it makes it less critical if there is an extended period of time where the two halves are operating at different speeds. If you go to Illustration 43-30 on ETKA and look at the top, parts 37 to 41 are reproduced and incorporated into this design - just like the original decoupler.

I must make it clear that I have nothing against Tom and Adam Lengyel's decoupler. I am running one of their decouplers in my Syncro at this very moment and we do sell these at Fast Forward. There are many people out there with the Lengyel decoupler and have very positive results with many happy miles of driving. When we switched over to selling the Lengyel decoupler at the end of last year there were some people who had a concern over bearingless design and were very disappointed that we stopped selling the SDP copy. Now we are offering a choice. Choice is a good thing! :-)

So, in two weeks, I will have stock of the needle bearing style of the decoupler.

For pictures of this decoupler see:

Syncro / Vanagon List exclusive pricing for the European decoupler is $1750 Canadian plus a fully refundable $250 Canadian core charge. This works out to about $1300 USD plus a $190 USD core charge.

Please pmail me with any questions or if you would like to be put on the list to purchase one of these SDP copy decouplers.

For those who want the Lengyel design, we will still carry these fine decouplers and we can take Visa or MasterCard, which Tom and Adam do not.

Thank you.
