I think ,if price didn't matter to me, but it does no deep pockets here I'd take a beat up Vanagon Westfalia and a new Porsche 996 twin turbo. Take it too a race shop , have a frame made put the Vanagon body on it would that ever been fun 450 hp, big brakes 4 wheel drive . But that would be the 2nd van the first would be stock. -----Original Message----- From: Ben T <BenTbtstr8@AOL.COM> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Date: Tuesday, February 03, 2004 12:41 AM Subject: Re: Anyone running a Oettinger powered Van( or completed van) ?

In a message dated 2/2/2004 2:31:11 PM Pacific Standard Time, wilden1-1@sbcglobal.net writes: I think the old rule of 'run what you brung' is still good. Most WBs will run 75 mph and even the Air Cooled Vanagons and heavy Westies will run 70 mph plus all day long if the engines are in good condition. Investing up to $5000.00 for a bigger engine so you can run an extra 50K miles is about two to three times what you'd spend keeping your existing engine running that much longer or replacing it with a good rebuilt engine. Stan,

I'm afraid I do not see how this relates to my point. I already have 4 other Vanagons with various engine combinations. But for the same reason most of us keep different sets of clothes in our closets, some of us have a variety of vehicles to drive for different occasions. I'm not knocking the basic air or water cooled Vanagons. Like the original poster I simply thought it would be cool to own and drive the ultimate designed-for-VW Wasserboxer. That's who Oettinger designed the flat-6 for. They have been designing a number of components for VW for decades.

Wouldn't you like to wear a Kevlar blazer with titanium buttons once in a while? If I could afford one and buy it here in the US, I'd love to wear one. Like the Oettinger flat-6 T3, it'd be a hoot and a hit with most of the folks here on the list.

BenT
