If I had about 135 horses in the back of my van kicking butt -- whether from a Subie conversion, Audi mill, late 4-banger, or even a hopped-up, hotrodded 2.1L Wasserboxer, I would be tickled. As it seems that would be the idel poerer range for the Vanagons'.
