The problem is not the gauge of the conductor as much as it is the number of stands in the wire and the composition of the insulation. I've replaced more than a few queefed out Vanagon conductors with Teflon insulated wire. Also, I've seen the vinyl wire harness sheathing become so brittle it breaks forming an edge sharp enough to eventually do damage to the conductors it contains. All this just adds some fun to the hunt whenever a Vanagon dies. Still, Vanagons do all right considering the many miles of service most of them have seen.
