I had a strange clunking in my rear left last summer. After turning the car, it would clunk noticeably for miles. Then it would suddenly stop. Took it to the tire shop, they pulled the drum and looked at the backing plate. Nothing. The noise continued. Took it to my mechanic. Nothing. I replaced the shoes and drums, and the sound was gone. Also grreatly improved my brakes.
