William, there is a light behind the sliding levers and heater switch. It may have burned out or been bumped out of place or the wire pulled off. The light is connected to the same wires as all the other dash lights that come on when the headlight switch is turned on and the brightness adjusts with the wheel below the headlight switch.

Getting to the light requires pulling the levers out one at a time first and then prying the rectangular panel off.

The levers may put up a big fight and then suddenly come loose. The lever is fatter inside the panel and sometimes will catch on the edge of the panel slot during removal. The plastic panel can be damaged by this. To help prevent any damage I slip a folded piece of thick paper over the lever and into the slot. This acts as a guide when the lever comes free and keeps the fatter inside part of the lever from catching on the edge of the slot and cracking it.

The rectangular panel has a molded in peg at each end. These pegs are pushed into holes in the dash to hold the panel in place. Use a butter knife or something similar to carefully pry each end of the panel free. As you pry look closely and you will be able to tell where each peg is. Pry as close to the pegs as possible so they come out straight. Otherwise you may snap one off.
