I have a similar knocking developing on my passenger side that only is heard when going stright and usually only audible at night when traffic noises are at a minimum. Is this a CV joint going bad?

In anticipation and curiosity I priced a new CV joint at the dealer ($237 + $127 labor) and at a local VW parts place ($57 including a new boot. No estimate on competition labor yet.) My choice if that is what it is will be to do it myself or hire it out.
