vanagons, and for that matter breadloafs, are not uncommon in san fran, and there seem sufficient mechanics around to handle the endless task of keeping them running. (keep in mind that the air force has been recycling the b-52 bomber for more than a half century.) surely few other vehicles of our vintages are still out there running around except maybe in cuba or, i've heard, eastern europe. there is one mechanic in the sunset district, working out of an old pre-art-deco gas station near andronico's, who specializes in buses only and, i think, strictly carbureted ones at that, and he seems pretty busy. at the same time, air-cooled vans & westies seem to be vanishing from the local classifieds. you hardly ever see one for sale anymore. art, '82 westy. |
