In the State of Texas I saw ten or more Vanagons in wrecking yards in ten years. In that same ten years I saw possibly 5 on streets and highways operating. During that ten years I bought, restored and sold four Westy Vanagons other than the one I kept and drove. All of my projects were Air Cooled 80-83 Westy, except the one 66 Westy. I personally wrecked out three non Westy Vanagons. The most common Vanagon that I'm now finding in Texas are dead engine Vanagons and Westy. It is said; "You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Vanagon", in Seattle and Great Northwest. I've also been told that there are many Vanagon / Westy in Albuquerque, but I haven't seen any while visiting there. A routine check with E bay should bring out the location for current Westy. You may need to go where there is a larger counter-culture (i.e. "hippies" and hippie wanna-be's). It seems the Northwest has a better than average number of Vanagons, and I would guess the Bay area would be a good place to find one, too. Depending on where in the "middle of the country" you are, you might also try Boulder, CO. They're not unusual in the Denver area, but I see one about every two blocks whenever I go up to Boulder. |
