I got to see a 1977 Scirocco outfitted with a 2.0L 16v (continuous
injection when stock) engine from a GTI, updated with Digifant injectors
and Megasquirt.  It was a pretty slick setup, especially with the software
the gentleman had on his laptop to control it.  Looked like it could be
tuned in realtime, and gave instantaneous O2 sensor reading and such as
well.

Myself, I've long preferred the CIS-E system used in mid-to-late 80s
VW/Audi passenger cars, pre-Digifant.  It's not a learning system, but
it's a big step up from Digi as far as being fault-tolerant.  As I have
told folks before, "The thing I like about CIS-E is that I can take the FI
computer out, toss it on the ground, start the car and run over it if I
want to."

Probably wouldn't be worth trying to retrofit CIS-E into a Vanagon,
though, when there are better pulsed FI systems like Megasquirt that drop
in more readily.
