1. Lasts Longer 2. Handles many, many more discharge cycles if you use 12 volt stuff much 3. No out gassing. Although the battery box is vented .. I like the idea of a battery that doesn't outgas since its in my living area. 4. Prettier :) 5. Gives you something to show off at campouts.

I guess the question I would like to ask those who use the Optima for a single, starter battery is ... why?

Given the much higher cost, what are the advantages of using it over a good lead acid battery?
