You've removed the nut that holds the clamping mechanism to the block, right? After that the main thing holding the distributor in is the "sticktion" between the rubber O-ring that fits in the grove of the distributor body and the block itself. Not sure if we're talking water- or air-cooled here but I've also had the surrounding tin on an air-cooled engine hang up the distributor some.
