hi jim the set is cheaper just go that route. it also has all the tubes of goo that you would need to assemble the whole monster. as for the heads have the valves pulled and 3 angle the valve seats. if the valves are not bent, have them refaced to save cash unless they are just to worn then replace. as for the valve guides a company called new way sells a tappered pin to check the slop in the valve guide. they cost about 20 bones for what ever size you need. goes with out saying if the guide is bad the valve maybe bent and then you need to do alittle work. dont just put them back on and hope for the best. takes to much time to fart with when you really dont want to mess with it later. your already there just do it. c-ya Jonce
