Back in the "Bad ol' Days" when I lived in Western Alaska - Yupik Eskimo Country - I went in the early winter out to Chevak, a small Eskimo Village way out on the tundra. It was winter, and in pursuit of the purpose of my visit there I went to the school to do an environmental survey on the facility. The front ot the building was completely covered in a massive snowbank that went from ground level all the way up the face of the building and curled over onto the top of the building. It was quite high. To enter the building I had to walk stooped through a 25 foot snow tunnel to get to the front door, The odd part was that aside from a small drift at the rear of the building, it was relatively free of snow.

I talked to the principal teacher, got together with the official school maintenance person, a local Eskimo man, and did my job and left.

Way over in the spring I went back out to the School at Chevak. There was no snow at all at the school front, none along the sides, gut there was a massive snowbank on the rear of the building, all the way up to the roof peak. This time I commented to the maintenance man that the last time I was out there the snow was deep around front. He then replied with a perfectly straight face, "Yes, that is the way it is here on the tundra! It just snows once at the beginning of winter, and then simply blows back and forth the reast of the time!"

Cracked me up!!
