I would also suggest removing interior door panel. If it helps... when my door handle failed it sheared off. replaced that. Since that time the rod that runs from the front handle to the rear latch mechanism broke. That resulted in symptoms like you describe. My door is apart... looking for VW discontinued door parts and push pins to replace interior panel.. sigh. good luch
