So, in your eyes, what my friend did is OK? The holes are round and there is lots of material around them. I agree, Mickey Moose (hey it's Canada!) oblong holes are a definite no go in my books too!

Ok, by not touching the caliper or the carrier I meant modifying the hole to be oblong etc. If there is enough meat and you drill a standard M14 hole, that would be OK. I meant grinding around in the M12 hole until it gets egg-formed and the Vanagon bolts fit through, that is dangerous!
