Antifreeze causes the kidneys of animals - dogs and cats - and probably
many more - to simply turn to mush. Animal dies of kidney failure. It's
grim and gross, and I would not inflict that on any dumb animal, except
rats!! But if I could not keep the rats and others separate, I wouldn't
put the stuff out at all.
Pack your stuff in secure heavy plastic or metal boxes with tight
fitting lids.Of course if a bear visits, you may be in trouble.
I camped in the campground on Balsam Mountain in the Smokeys once.
Elevation up near 7,000 feet. Warden came around and cautioned about
the bears. In the night one old she-bear and her cubs came into camp.
She was giving lessons to her cub that night on how to forage/scrounge
the campground for food. The garbage cans were secured between two
posts, and the lids snapped down on them. In the night, one by one, she
led her cubs to each garbage can, and with a big old paw, cuffed that
garbage can. She knew right were to hit it, because in the morning,
there was not a single garbage can with a lid on it.
