Subject: expansion tank cap avail? old school
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

I've got an 83.5 Westy and am in need of the expansion tank cap. VW dealer says it's no longer available. Can I just go with a generic Stant type cap?

This expansion tank cap is metal looking like an old Chevy radiator cap and was used in early water-cooled gas engines--in fact I think this set up was only used for a few months before VW went to another expansion tank design of the type that utilizes that elusive H plastic pipe and a green plastic cap. The expansion tank part number is 068 121 405D. It's for the 1.9L. The cap I need lists as part number 025 121 321.

Once I get the cap can I replace it with the engine cold and NOT need to bleed the system?

Thanks Jeff 83.5 Westy LA,CA
