Not sure if you're asking about technique or carriers. Technique-wise, build a small pallet that's an inch or so longer than the engine and an inch or so wider than the engine. Wrap the engine well with plastic and tie or strap the engine to the pallet. Build a sturdy cardboard box with a more-or-less "cut-out" bottom that you staple to the pallet.

Carrier-wise, I've shipped and engine via Amtrak fairly cheaply, though not all Amtrak stations have the equipment to handle cargo.
