If one visits www.packing.org and checks out the requirements for a Florida CCW with its significant reciprocal agreements you could sleep a little more protected so to speak. Not that any vanagoneer would ever need to protect hissownself from anything but the occasional flatulent moose, rampaging nutria, operatic kittycat, amorous alligator, or vanmunching griz, but hey things do go bump in the night and they truly are out to get you, lars. Also should you have such a permit, always check with the state laws regarding what constitutes your "domicile" when travelling in the van. Laws vary from state to state. F'rinstance CCW in Florida specifically excludes weapons other than the handgun. 911 is far too late for most "encounters" . " Only the paranoid survive"..attributed to Andy Grove of Intel

Your protection is your responsibility, wear that mosquito repellant and check for ticks in the morning. Question authority politely. Ask to see a photo ID BEFORE you open the door. Politely decline consent to search unless the LEO can explain probable cause. When in doubt, run away.

RVC- putting a lock on the cabinet door makes it a safe location insofar as transport is concerned in many states. Having a built in safe is even more effective if you are often not in your van for extended periods of time.
