I have an 85 Camper with a Behr aftermarket AC. It works well and I'm in California. The existing ducts are a little on the small side, however it cools the van down. I bought it with the AC, installed by a mechanic in LA. It takes up room in the dash so the radio was moved and the glovebox is half occupied by the condensor but I am happy. fint

I am looking at getting a Westy with a wasserboxer ('84 to '86, probably) and wonder how expensive (I know it will be lots) and how difficult (I'm mechanically inclined) it will be to add A/C on to a Westy that doesn't have it. Is this even practical, or am I asking for a nightmare?? There are few choices for Westy Vanagons in my price range ($5500 max - yes, I've found some - and not ratted out, either!) and restricting to Westies with A/C is reducing my search.

Since I am in Phoenix, AZ - I will need A/C. This will be a daily driver for me. I have had a '68 Kombi, a '71 Campmobile and a '78 Westy (Standard) in the past. It will also have to pass smog here - which is more restrictive than California.

I have already eliminated the air-cooled Vanagons with A/C - just seems to me that air-cooled + 120 degree heat + the added load of A/C = Doom for the engine. If I'm wrong in that, I'd love to hear it!

Of course, what I would really like is a late Westy Syncro (with A/C and power everything), but lets be real here!!
