2WD will not work in a Syncro. Well, it will work, just that it would be reading 2x faster that what you are going.

I have successfully installed a 1990 Jetta speedometer into my Syncro and it works better than the Syncro one as far as speed is concerned and how far you have travelled. You need to swap the guts over as the plastic backing will not fit. The Syncro is 1000 rev per KM and the 85-92 Golf/Jetta is 950 rev per KM - with larger tires this works about perfect! Also, you can grab the tachometer and install that at the same time to have matching fonts and 7000 RPM redline or a Diesel tach if you have done an engine swap.
