A lifter will not chew up the adjuster screws. This will only be done by
screws not being properly hardened, incorrect angle of the rocker to the
valve stem, ( if the seats were cut, the rockers need to be shimmed out
or the valve stems properly shortened), or the valve guides were not
reamed properly cuasing the valves to stick, when the engine is cold.
This will obviously cause lifter moise and make the engine run like you
know what unitl the guides expand.

Subject: Problem with local service shop (vancouver, BC)... slight rant
Hello list, maybe you can help me with a problem i am
having with a local repair shop - Adria Import Car
Service, Ltd.
Basically, i've had a persistent noisy lifter since
the rebuild of my engine, and have, over time, tried
all the list-approved methods of quieting it down.
Nothing worked. Now that i am living in an apartment
with on-street parking, my time and space to work on
it are quite limited to the point where it is simply
more cost effective for me to have someone do the work
for me. Based on recommendations from the list, i
went to Adria's for service. I went there for them to
diagnose which lifter was making noise, and while they
were in there, fix a squealing belt.
When i initially dropped it off, the service was
prompt and they gave me calls with updates on the
progress. The service ended up costing about $300Cdn,
which included replacing all the adjusting screws
(they were all chewed up), and a new belt. Problem is
that the van still makes all the same noises.
The first fellow i dealt with (a younger guy, i think
the son) seemed to be on the ball - quick with
communication. At least up until i asked him to get
back to me with which lifter it was that had the
adjusting screw that all but disintegrated. That call
never happened. Ever since then, i've had terrible
luck with them - trying to get that question answered,
and to have them at least make good on fixing the
squealing belt. At the same time, though, i've also
only been managing to talk to an older fellow who
strikes me as completely rude and dismissive (as well
as hard of hearing - couldn't hear the belt squeal).
What i am trying to figure out is what recourse (if
any) i should have. I'd just be happy if i could get
that info as to which lifter caused the disintegrated
adjuster, and to have them simply get that belt quiet
- but that last one is more out of principle than
anything else.
Should i just cut my losses and frustrations now,
taking it as a lesson learned and go back to fixing my
own van, despite not having time or space?
I guess this is really more of a venting than needing
actual resolution, but any thoughts would be
appreciated. I'll ask a related tech question in
another e-mail.
Thanks,
-Damon
