The Vanagon is not designed for high speed driving and lacks the additional safety features such as airbags and ABS brakes. If you want to make the weenies mad get a motorcycle. The problem isn't that the Vanagon is'nt fast enough but everyone is speeding. I should have been a motorcycle cop. 75 mph is fairly stable in my Vanagon depending on the road . Hard acceleration is tough on the CV's and your brakes and transmission, especially the Syncro trans which is not the best built of VW transmissions. A affordable choice with reasonable power but not enough to shut down the competion is a inline four like my 95 Golf engine. It's a box on wheels after all.

You can get a Subie SVX motor for less than $1000 if you know where to look. I have driven a Subaru SVX-powered Vanagon, which shall be dyno-tested March 6th and I must say that all sins have their price. It's a wonderful, powerful motor which transforms the Vanagon into a barely-recognizable beast, so if you have the money, go ahead and sin. :-) On the other hand, if you are more frugal and don't care about passing, and pissing off, high-school weenies in their Hondas, the TDI conversion is the better alternative due to the reliability and economy of the motor.
