Hey Kevin, No you do not need to remove the linkage from the tranny. Because of the c-shaped clamp that holds the two pieces together, it crimps the outer bar onto the lower bar. So a little hammering may be in order. If that is the case, it may be better to drop the linkage from the tranny to avoid beating the linkage, which would be slamming the gears in the tranny.
