Yes I did not use the plastic surround at all, just the metal grille part.
When I was installing the 4" speakers it didn't look like there was much
room for a larger speaker. I guess I could cut the door sheet metal to
install a larger speaker. I have not yet looked, but would it be required
to cut metal to install a speaker near the bottom of the door? There just
seemed to be a lot going on up top.
I was thinking I could use a passive crossover network and just add
another speaker. The 4" (and coaxial tweeter) would do say 800 hz and up
and the 6.5" would do below that to maybe 100 hz. I would use a fairly
inexpensive 6.5" speaker as it would only operate from 100-1000 hz. So
this would be sort of a 3-way system.
Yeah, I have a feeling the 10" will not make up for the small 4" speakers;
it will be great for bass though. I have seen pictures of a 6x9" speaker
in the bottom of the front door - although I would want to use a round
speaker.
