My 4" Alpines seem to have quite a bit of room behind.  I think I measured
at least 5" of space.  I'm pretty sure the backside of 5.25" should fit.  I
was thinking a 6.5" might even work, but I've spoken to someone else that
said it required some cutting.

Assuming you keep the map pocket, and the speaker is below it, I think you
would have to cut the door metal a bit.

Yeah that seems like it would work pretty well.  The one nice thing about
the components is separate tweeter placement.  But since you already have
the 4" coaxials, adding a 6.5" seems like a pretty simple way to go.
