Mark, I just replaced front shocks on both my vans in November. It is very straight forward. Tom C.'s procedure is very complete, I think it took about 30 minutes to change both front shocks. You do NOT need a spring compressor, you don't even have to touch the springs. It was easier on my '84 since it sits higher, I didn't even have to jack it up.
