On an 84, the radiator fan runs whenver the AC is switched on, regardless of whether or not the compressor is on. Check the wiring and relays there.

i have an 84 Vanagon 1.9 passenger van w/AC. My problem is the radiator fan motor wont shut off. I have replaced the relay switch that screws into the radiator with a few salvage switches but still get the same result. I cant beleive 4 of these salvage screw-in switches are all bad--what else could be wrong--I have pulled the fuse in the meantime and I would like to fix it before it gets hot--could this be related to my A/C problem?(too high pressure, compressor cycles and still no cold air----mechanic says I likely need an expansion valve and a new dryer wouldn't hurt)
