You can get a Subie SVX motor for less than $1000 if you know where to look. I have driven a Subaru SVX-powered Vanagon, which shall be dyno-tested March 6th and I must say that all sins have their price. It's a wonderful, powerful motor which transforms the Vanagon into a barely-recognizable beast, so if you have the money, go ahead and sin. :-)

On the other hand, if you are more frugal and don't care about passing, and pissing off, high-school weenies in their Hondas, the TDI conversion is the better alternative due to the reliability and economy of the motor.

Now, does anyone have a 1.8t Vanagon I can test?
