Ask the dealer to set up an out of state delivery. He can deliver it and transfer the ownership to you at the state line. I went through this when I purchased my motor home in 1999 and am planning to do it again this year. Apparently, California has an issue with out of state purchases to avoid the sales tax. I think Oregon doesn't have a vehicle sales tax. So a vehicle that has transferred ownership anywhere without paying CA. sales tax can not be driven in CA. for 90 days. The reason I did not want to pay the CA slaes tax is that they collect the tax on the full price of the purchase. In NY, you do not pay tax on the value of the trade in.

Hi All, I had a chance to bid on a Californian Vanagon, on Ebay. The seller is a dealer, and has informed me, that I have to pay .0825 sales tax to CA. In the past, I have always paid sales tax to my home State, when I license to vehicle. Is this a new procedure? thanks, John C. SLC, UT...
