Oh, I was so proud of myself this afternoon with my 'timing success' that I took ole Billy out for a drive. Guess what - now he's skipping worse than ever. When he's idling I get a sort of popping sound from the exhaust, and when I start off down the road he skips like he's running out of gas, or otherwise loading up, I can't tell which. The exhaust system is new (about two days old) and the tailpipe is running black, very black inside. What the heck is going on here? I think its time to take Billy to a pro. I've got a good man here in town who really knows Vanagons and so I'll make an appointment next week. In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions for me to try? "Have tools, will try."
