Speak of the devil, I quickly logged on to post this question, and to my surprised it was kind of being discussed already.

If one does upgrade to the 5 speed, will any mods have to be made to the shift linkage? What is the shift pattern of the 5 speed? It may be easiest to explain/understand the answer to this by refering to the said "H pattern", in the 5 speed, is first gear below reverse? So, first gear would be in to the rear and towards the driver of said "H pattern"? Did Vanagons that came stock with the 5 speed still have the shifter that has to be pushed downwards to get outside of the "H pattern", or does the stock 5 speed shifter freely float between first and second and visa versa?
